Final Practice

Catherine and I met earlier before the presentation and practiced several times. We tested every button and made sure that there is no any technical problem. We also timed the presentation so that it's no more than 20 minutes. To avoid the technical problems, I chose a video without sound and less than 1000kb. I think we are ready for the presentation!

Updating

Yesterday, I met Cathy Borland in Sugarland campus to discuss this project. We brought all the materials that may be used in the powerpoint presentation. Some sources have very complex concept maps to introduce the management of asthma. We decided to use these maps to show the class how difficult a concept map could be, which is considered as the disadvantage of a concept mapping. We will make our own concept mapping to discuss the asthma. We also went through every detail about the presentation. Here are some examples of concept mapping:

Criteria for selection of media

The best media are chosen based on the ability to deliver the methods and activities effectively and efficiently. Various blends of media may be selected in introducing mind mapping and concept mapping, such as journals, video clips, software, and mobile devices. I was seeking the best media within acceptable costs, while meeting the learning intents. For example, EDGE Diagrammer, a diagramming tool, is available at http://www.pacestar.com/links/trial.htm. It will cost between $50 and $790, depending on features. Wise Mapping is a free web mind mapping tool that creates mind maps mixing new technologies. In this case, I chose the second one. Therefore, when selecting instructional media, I need to consider the learners' needs, resources, experience, and training goals.

Logic used in searching for the identified sources and media

Catherine and I chose mind mapping or concept mapping as an instructional method in teaching adult patients to manage symptoms of asthma. When conducting the search, it is necessary to break down the topic into its component concepts. We divided the project into two parts: the introduction of mind/concept maps and the management of asthma. Once the concepts have been identified, I chose the keywords for each concept. I opened the Google search engine and typed the keywords: “concept mapping”. There are about 4,030,000 results related to “concept mapping” in Google search engine. In order to narrow down the results, I added concept words, used vocabulary that is more specific to the topic, and used the quotation marks. I also tried different types of sources within search engines, including images, videos, news and books. In addition, I used the UHV library web site, clicked in “Medline with Full Text” page, and searched for the key words “mind mapping and concept mapping”. After limiting the results to “full text”, I found 14 journals in the research database. Finally, I found three articles that introduce the mind or concept maps, two software web pages that create mind maps, and one video that discusses the definition of concept maps and the purpose of creating a concept map.
